Hitchcock Introduces Daniels Brenner's mother, Lydia as well as Suzanne Pleshette as his previous partner Annie, long before the events take place. The suspense is heightened due to Hitchcock taking time to establish the relationship between these two characters. Jessica Tandy, who played Brenner's mother Lydia and Suzanne Pleshette, as Annie Brenner's former love, both have memorable characters. Evan Hunter - better known as Ed McBain - adapted this screenplay, originally the work of Daphne Du Maurier, into the popular film. Hitchcock produced a brilliant film by using electronic sounds in place of music. The bizarre real-life incident of herringwaters that smoked on Capitola, Calif., in 1961, believed by some to occur due to diatom poisoning of anchovies digested by the birds causing extreme aggressiveness, was researched by Hitchcock in preparation for his film.
