Hitchcock Introduces Daniels Brenner's mother, Lydia as well as Suzanne Pleshette as his previous partner Annie, long before the events take place. The bizarre real-life incident of herringwaters that smoked on Capitola, Calif., in 1961, believed by some to occur due to diatom poisoning of anchovies digested by the birds causing extreme aggressiveness, was researched by Hitchcock in preparation for his film.
